Masked men rob and assault pair in County Durham

Three masked men carrying metal bars and a golf club forced their way into a house in County Durham.

They assaulted the two occupants, a man, 42, and his 23-year-old partner before stealing a number of items.

It happened in the Carville Terrace area of Willington on Saturday when one of the occupants answered a knock at the back door.

The burglars took two mobile phones, a small quantity of cash, jewellery, keys and a purse.

The three wore hoods and scarves to cover their faces.

Fled scene

The male occupant chased the men but was unable to catch up with them.

It is believed the burglars left in a vehicle possibly parked at the end of Watling Terrace.

The man and woman were left badly shaken by the attack and have received treatment for their injuries at the University Hospital of North Durham.

Police are appealing for witnesses. They said they believed the victim was known to the offenders.
