Flood relief programme for Sunderland approved

A £450,000 flood prevention scheme has been unveiled for the Hastings Hill area of Sunderland.

Northumbrian Water said the project would reduce the risk of flooding to properties around Sevenoaks Drive.

The work, which will take up to four months to complete, will involve upgrading 375m of sewer pipe so it can cope better with heavy rainfall.

A company spokeswoman said the project was expected to begin on 31 January and would involve some road closures.

Essential work

Danny Coyne, Northumbrian Water's project manager for the scheme, said: "Flooding is extremely distressing to customers and something we invest millions of pounds on every year to help reduce risk.

"The work will take place along Goodwood Road, Sevenoaks Drive and in the car park of the Hastings Hill public house.

"As with all essential work, some temporary traffic management is necessary.

"Everything will be done to reduce impact on residents and we appreciate their patience while we are working in this area."
