A murder inquiry has begun on Wearside after a 14-year-old boy died from stab wounds he received in his own home.

Jordan Cooper was found in a house in Newriggs, in the Fatfield area of Washington, early on Tuesday.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital but died a short time later, Northumbria Police said.

A force spokesman said a 31-year-old man, who is a relative of the dead boy, had been arrested and was being questioned by detectives.

Acting Ch Supt Alan Veitch said: "This is a tragic loss and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy.

"A man has been arrested and is in police custody."

Mr Veitch said extra officers were on patrol in the area to answer concerns members of the public may have.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later.

The teenager was a pupil at Biddick School Sports College.
