Biker, 49, airlifted after crash in County Durham

A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital after a collision with a car in Stainton Grove, County Durham.

The Honda motorbike was travelling eastbound on the A688 from Barnard Castle towards Staindrop on Saturday, when it was in collision with a Rover.

The rider, a woman, 49, from Shotton Colliery sustained serious head and back injuries, as well as a punctured right lung.

She was airlifted to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Her condition was described as "critical but stable" on Monday.

The driver of the car, an 81-year-old woman from Barnard Castle, was shocked but unhurt.

The road was closed for about two hours on Saturday.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
