A Durham Police sergeant and a detention officer have been accused of assault against a man in custody.

The pair, aged 50 and 60, have been summonsed over an alleged incident at Peterlee Police Station in March.

It follows a complaint that a 47-year-old was subjected to excessive and unreasonable force.

They will be charged with two counts each of assault by beating when they appear before Teesside Magistrates' Court on 5 October.

The move comes after an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
