Pelton man proposes in police van after ring theft

A man proposed to his girlfriend in the back of a police van after a burglary at their County Durham home, according to police.

The couple had returned to the address in Pelton after visiting relatives over Christmas to find that a number of items had been taken during a break-in.

One was a diamond engagement ring which the man had hidden in advance of a surprise proposal on New Year's Eve.

The secret came out as he listed the stolen items to officers.

After revealing details of the £330 ring, which he had concealed in a bedside cabinet, he asked his partner of 10 months to marry him and she agreed.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "A young couple left their home in The Wynd, Pelton, to spend time with family over Christmas.

"On their return on Boxing Day, they found thieves had broken into their house and stolen various items, including a diamond engagement ring which had been hidden ready for New Year's Eve when the young man was going to propose.

"Instead, he proposed in the back of the police van while CSI were fingerprinting their house."

Police have appealed for the thieves to return the ring and asked for witnesses to come forward.
