Woman dies four weeks after Quaking Houses crash

A County Durham woman has died four weeks after the car in which she was a passenger was involved in a collision.

Rita Hauxwell suffered serious injuries in the crash between a Renault Laguna and a Volkswagen Golf in Quaking Houses, near Stanley, on 1 June.

The 82-year-old, from Tantobie, was taken to hospital but died on Thursday.

Two 19-year-olds travelling in the other car, the Golf, have been arrested and are being questioned on suspicion of various motoring offences.

A post-mortem examination will take place early next week to establish a formal cause of death for Mrs Hauxwell.
