Kristian Thompson attack death: No further charges

A man jailed for an attack on a nightclub patron, who died 10 months later, will not be charged over the death, police have said.

Mark Berry was jailed for 28 months for punching Kristian Thompson in the K2 club, in Consett, in September 2010.

Mr Thompson died in July 2011, and after a year-long review of the case Durham Police said his attacker would not face further charges.

Berry, of Leadgate, County Durham, admitted causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr Thompson, of Burnopfield, died of a head injury in a Northampton hospital in July 2011.

Durham Police said: "A post-mortem on Kristian was carried out and the circumstances of his death were reviewed.

"A file was then sent to the Crown Prosecution Service for consideration on whether Mr Berry should face any further charges.

"Earlier this month we received correspondence from the CPS confirming no further action would be taken.

"The matter is now in the hands of the County Durham coroner and an inquest into Kristian's death is expected to take place later this year."
