Number of abandoned trolleys in Swindon drops

The number of abandoned trolleys in Swindon has more than halved after measures were introduced to stop them being taken from supermarkets.

From October 2009 until March 2010 Swindon Borough Council said 142 trolleys were recovered but in the past six months that figure was 67.

It said measures including magnetic devices to stop them being stolen have been a success.

Councillor Keith Williams said the abandoned trolleys were unsightly.

"Abandoned trolleys can often be the cause of general flytipping and other anti-social behaviour," he added.
