Police scheme for 'at risk' youngsters in Trowbridge

Police in Trowbridge have launched an initiative which aims to promote the safety of vulnerable youngsters in the town.

Operation StaySafe identifies young people who are out late at night and at risk of becoming a victim of crime or being drawn into criminal behaviour.

Police are then able to take them to a local youth centre to speak to a social worker.

They will be on hand to notify parents and offer support and advice.

The scheme has already been rolled out successfully around the UK.

Kevin Sweeney, of Wiltshire Council's Youth Services, said: "If a young person is out late at night, the question you have to ask is why.

"By operating a 'stay safe' approach, rather than the police just picking them up and taking them to the police station, young people can go to the local youth centre and talk to a social worker."
