Swindon council crackdown on illegal trade waste

More businesses have been dumping waste in Swindon's household recycling centres since the increase in landfill tax, the council has said.

More commercial vehicles have been seen using the sites after the tax rose from £8 per tonne to £56.

Swindon Borough Council said household waste sites were not licensed to accept commercial waste.

Phil Thomas, from the council, said it was wrong that taxpayers were paying for traders who use the site illegally.

He added: "We will be monitoring the site to identify traders who are obviously flouting the law and take appropriate action to stop them using the site."
