A murder inquiry is under way in Swindon after a 40-year-man was found stabbed in the town centre on Friday.

The injured man was found when police were called to Manchester Road at 2130 BST following reports of an assault.

The victim, who lived locally, died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics and police officers.

Two local men aged 22 and 23 have been arrested on suspicion of murder. They remain in custody at Gablecross police station.

A post-mortem examination revealed the victim died from multiple stab wounds.

Police searching the area recovered a weapon which will be subject to forensic examination.

Det Supt Sean Memory said inquiries were at an early stage and would continue over the weekend.

"As our investigation continues part of Manchester Road will remain closed for the remainder of today [Saturday] to allow for area searches and house-to-house inquiries to take place.

"Following initial inquiries we believe that the two men arrested did know the deceased and we are continuing to try and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"I am still appealing for any witnesses to come forward to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers," he added.
