A man has appeared in court charged with murder after a fatal stabbing in a Swindon street.

Police have named the dead man as 40-year-old José Maria Raimundo Pereira.

Officers were called to a fight in Manchester Road, Swindon, on Friday night. They carried out first aid but Mr Pereira died at the scene.

Swindon magistrates remanded Edino Carvalho, 23, of Plymouth Street in Swindon, in custody to appear at Bristol Crown Court on 25 May.

A 22-year-old man has been bailed pending inquiries.

'Very precious'

A post-mortem examination on Saturday showed Mr Pereira, from Manchester Road, died from multiple stab wounds.

In a statement, his wife Susan Pereira paid tribute to her husband, who was known to friends and family as Raymond.

"I have lost a person who was very precious to me, my love, my life," she said.

"I pray that such tragedy should not be experienced by any family ever again."

Mr Pereira's family said he was a cheerful and happy man who was always ready to help others.

"Raymond was dedicated to his family and well respected in his community," they said in a statement.

"The local community are shocked and saddened by his death."

Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses.
