Trapped man dies in Salisbury fire

A man has died and two others treated for smoke inhalation following a house fire in Salisbury.

Emergency services were called to the address in The Beeches near Tollgate Road at about 1215 BST.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said the victim was reported to be trapped in an upstairs room and officers later confirmed he died in the blaze.

Eyewitnesses described the fire as "a massive inferno" and that "explosions and glass popping" could be heard.

The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Six fire engines from Salisbury, Amesbury, Wilton, Fordingbridge and Romsey were called to the fire.

One fireman was treated for minor head injuries. Police are asking drivers to avoid the Tollgate Road area.
