New leisure campus planned for Wootton Bassett

A Wiltshire town could have a brand new swimming pool, following a fire at its previous one in December.

Most of the facilities at Lime Kiln Leisure Centre in Wootton Bassett have reopened, but the pool remains shut.

Town officials backed plans at a meeting on Wednesday for an entire new leisure campus, including a pool, which could take 18 months to be built.

Earlier, over 100 parents and children marched through the town to call for the Lime Kiln swimming pool to reopen.

Wootton Bassett councillor Peter Doyle said: "It would not be a prudent use of public funds to spend money on temporary repairs to the fire-damaged Lime Kiln pool if that was soon to become a demolition and construction site."

Reverend Thomas Woodhouse from a local residents association said: "If we can have a better and bigger facility, then let's try for that."
