Two arrested after five-hour siege in Wiltshire village

Two men have been arrested over a five-hour siege at a house near Swindon.

A 38-year-old and a 44-year-old were arrested after two men barricaded themselves into a property at Reids Piece, Purton, on Wednesday morning.

Police said council bailiffs had been trying to repossess the property when the two men barricaded themselves into the property, doused it in petrol and threatened to set it alight.

More than 20 people were evacuated to Purton village hall during the siege.

Armed police offices and trained negotiators were called to the house in Purton at 1100 BST after council bailiffs' attempts to evict two people from the property failed.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said trained negotiators were able to talk one of the men into leaving the house at about 1530 BST.

The second man was arrested at about 1600 BST.

The arrested men are being held in custody on suspicion of making threats to kill and attempted arson with intent to endanger life.
