Eco-park plan for old Erskine Barracks site in Wilton

People living in a town in Wiltshire want to build an eco-park on nearby land owned by the Military of Defence.

The MoD wants to sell the former Erskine Barracks site near Wilton for residential use, but a local group says it could include affordable eco-homes.

The Wilton Eco Park Project's plans also include a visitors centre, which would give people advice about making homes more eco-friendly.

Suzanne Butters, from the project, said it would be "extremely innovative".

She added: "It will use the most advanced technology from around the world, producing a centre of excellence that will put Wilton on the map.

"It would inspire a lot of people and there's not another one in the country."

Consisting of 350 affordable homes, green business units and allotments, the entire site would be carbon neutral and powered by a range of solar, thermal and recycling generators.

The South West Wiltshire Area Board are shortly due to consider an application by the Wilton Eco Park Project group for funding to help with a public consultation.
