A thoroughbred show horse had to be put down after she was maimed by dogs in Wiltshire.

Nikita, a dark bay pony, was found severely injured in Park Cottage Fields, Tollard Royal, at about 14:30 GMT on Saturday.

She had been attacked by at least one dog and injuries to her legs were considered so serious that there was no possibility of recovery.

Wiltshire police have urged anyone with information to contact them.

Tisbury community beat manager PC Martyn Day said: 'To find Nikita in such a state was extremely distressing for her owner."

PC Day said he would particularly like to speak to a woman in a silver car who stopped in the lane next to the field and spoke to the horse's owner on Sunday afternoon.
