Salisbury Plain device made safe

An incendiary device discovered in Chitterne on Salisbury Plain has been made safe, police have said.

Wiltshire Police, the fire service and the Army, were called at about 16:00 GMT on Tuesday after a contractor unearthed the military ordnance.

The device, which was not at risk of exploding, had been leaking phosphorus overnight.

All the roads through Chitterne have reopened although the A360 will close again when the device is moved.

On Tuesday evening, residents were told to stay inside and to keep doors and windows closed as a precautionary measure.
