Devizes canal death man named by police

A man who drowned in a canal in Wiltshire on Friday evening has been named by police.

Gary Smith, 46, from Devizes, was rescued from a lock on the Caen Hill stretch of the Kennet and Avon in Devizes at about 20:20 BST on Friday.

Despite being treated at the scene and taken by air ambulance to Great Western Hospital in Swindon, he died two hours later.

A woman, 47, arrested on suspicion of manslaughter has been released on bail.

A post-mortem examination confirmed Mr Smith had died from drowning. His family have been informed.
