Swindon Borough Council consults over benefit cuts plan

Residents have been asked for their views over planned cuts to council tax benefits in the Swindon area.

Conservative-run Swindon Borough currently pays £13m a year in council tax benefit which is then reimbursed by the government.

Next year this will fall to £11m and although some savings can be made in other areas, a cut of £1.1m is still needed, the council has said.

Councillors have said the cuts will not affect pensioners or disabled people.

The consultation runs until 9 November and people can give their views via the council website or at its civic offices.
