Housing association opens communal allotment in Swindon

A communal allotment and garden for affordable housing tenants in Wiltshire has been officially opened.

The gardens are part of a £1.8m development of 22 homes built on on Manor Road, Swindon.

The development was created by Raglan Housing and the garden was a joint venture with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Sarah Cundy, from the wildlife trust, said: "They are only small plots but they can supplement people's diets with fresh fruit and vegetables."

Work on the garden started in March - previously it was overgrown with brambles.

"We hope to teach people some basic skills about preparing their own food as well," she added.

The housing association said the allotment was a "holistic approach" in response to the rising cost of food and the growth of food banks.
