Wiltshire police officer accused of cell Taser assault

A Wiltshire police officer has appeared in court accused of assaulting a man by firing a Taser at him in a cell.

Pc Lee Birch, 30, is alleged to have used the weapon against Daniel Dove at a custody unit in Melksham on 23 December last year.

He is also accused of misconduct in public office relating to his actions as he handcuffed Mr Dove and strip-searched him in the cell.

Pc Birch was given bail at Swindon Crown Court until October.

He is next due to appear at Bristol Crown Court.

The court heard the case was a private prosecution by Mr Dove.

Pc Birch is accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and misfeasance in a public office.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said he was continuing with his normal duties.
