A woman has been arrested after a man fell from a footbridge in Wiltshire suffering serious head injuries.

The 19-year-old man, from Salisbury, is being treated in Southampton Hospital following the incident overnight on the A36 in the city.

Police said an 18-year-old woman was being quizzed on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Officers were called at 03:30 BST and the eastbound carriageway was shut for several hours for investigation work.

Det Con Sarah Chaplin said: "Although this incident appears to have happened during the early hours of the morning, we are appealing to anybody who was in the area between 11pm last night and 3.30am this morning, either walking, or driving nearby, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious.

"Any amount of information, no matter how small it may seem, could be vital to our investigation."

The footbridge is between Castle Roundabout and St Mark's Roundabout.
