Armed police in York arrest Sainsbury's robbery suspect

A suspected robber was cornered by armed police after staff at a supermarket in York were threatened with a knife.

Air support from West Yorkshire Police was called to help trace the offender after he fled empty-handed from the Sainsbury's store in Acomb on Monday.

After a tip-off from a passerby, armed officers surrounded a house in Croftway, off Acomb Green.

A 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

Police said the robber had fled the supermarket empty-handed and no-one had been injured.

The Sainsbury's store was closed for several hours as police investigated the incident.
