Ripon traders' fears stop Christmas road repairs
Roadworks planned for a North Yorkshire city have been postponed after businesses complained they would affect Christmas trade.
Repairs in Kirkgate and Market Place in Ripon, which start on Monday, were due to continue over the festive period.
The work will now take place until 13 November and will not resume until February or March.
The county council said the repairs were essential but it did not want to damage the local economy.
Councillor Gareth Dadd, executive member for highways, said: "Following representations from the local business community about the possible negative effects of the work in the run-up to Christmas, we have decided to take immediate steps to address their concerns.
"This is essential repair work, but we are anxious to do all we can to ensure that Ripon's economy does not suffer as a result.
"The whole country is experiencing difficult economic times, and we feel it is essential to do all we can to minimise the impact on local businesses."
