Fatal Harrogate house fire 'not deliberate'

A house fire in which an elderly Harrogate man died last week is believed to have started accidentally, police have said.

The body of 75-year-old James Kirkpatrick was found on the first floor of the house in Birch Grove in the early hours of 30 December.

Police said that after initial examinations of the scene "there appear to be no suspicious circumstances".

An inquest into Mr Kirkpatrick's death was opened and adjourned on Tuesday.

Further investigations were being carried out to determine the exact cause of the fire, police said.
