A £5m scheme to improve a junction on the A64 at Malton has been approved by councillors.

Ryedale District Council believes improvements to the junction, at Brambling Fields, could reduce traffic congestion in Malton by up to 30%.

The cost of the scheme is being jointly met by North Yorkshire County Council and Ryedale District Council.

Construction is expected to begin in January 2012 and could take up to nine months to complete.

Initial estimates suggest the improvements, which include a new slip road, will cost £5.6m.

North Yorkshire County Council is providing £3.22m with Ryedale District Council contributing £2.37m.
