York students given burglary warning
University students in York are being urged to tighten security at their homes after a spate of burglaries.
North Yorkshire Police said over the past month there had been an increase in thefts from students' homes, mainly in the Heslington and Fishergate areas.
Since 1 October, there have been 17 thefts, mostly involving bicycles left in back yards.
Police said the number of alleyways in those areas made it easy for thieves to climb over walls unnoticed.
Officers have been patrolling at night and delivering letters to the affected areas.
Ch Insp Dave Hannan warned students against leaving doors, windows and gates open.
He said: "Ensure the last one out locks the door, keep laptops, phones and MP3 players hidden from view and leave a light on when you go out at night."
