York affected by second power cut

More than 1,000 properties were left without electricity after two power cuts hit York on Tuesday.

The first cut left 400 properties in the Coppergate area without electricity between 08:00 and 09:30 GMT.

The second interruption to supply came at about 16:00 GMT and affected 600 homes and businesses in the Goodramgate area of the city.

Northern Power Grid apologised and said supply was fully restored at about 18:00 GMT.

Some businesses hit by the power cuts said it had badly affected custom and they would be looking to claim compensation.

'Record amounts'

Louise Radley, from York Hog Roast on Goodramgate, said: "We are losing custom because of this and it is the second time today we've been affected by a power cut."

Tracey Suter, restaurant manager at Drakes Fisheries on Low Petergate, said it was devastating for them.

She said: "Last week before Christmas and we're doing record amounts and having a busy teatime and then the lights go.

"In this climate we are having to turn people away who want to come and spend their money. It is devastating. We definitely want compensating."

Northern Power Grid said it had not identified what had caused the two power cuts.
