Power firms pays for parking in Harrogate
Last-minute Christmas shoppers in a North Yorkshire town were able to park for free after a power company paid for parking.
Northern Powergrid made the gesture to shoppers in Harrogate after a power failure last Saturday.
Some 1,200 spaces at the Victoria and Jubilee car parks in the town were paid for on Christmas Eve.
A fire at a substation caused the power cut that affected 19,000 customers last Saturday.
John Barnett, director of customer operations at Northern Powergrid, said: "Events of the type that occurred last Saturday in Harrogate are very rare and we are very aware of the inconvenience that the power cut caused; including to retailers, entertainment venues, and their customers.
"We wanted to provide a gesture of goodwill and we are delighted to be able to take up the council's suggestion regarding providing free parking arrangements in the town on Christmas Eve."
