Union fears 140 jobs to go at York Del Monte factory

Up to 140 jobs could be axed with the closure of York's Del Monte factory, a union fears.

The Bakers Food and Allied Workers' Union (BFAW) claims the factory, which makes salads and coleslaw, has lost a contract with a supermarket chain.

Sam Vickers, regional organiser of BFAW, said he was "very pessimistic about the factory remaining open", but was meeting managers next week.

Del Monte said it had "no comment" to make on the claims.

The factory, on Shipton Road, was previously owned by Fisher Foods before being bought by Fresh Del Monte, in 2003.

Mr Vickers said he understood the firm was trying to secure new contracts to keep the factory operating.
