Richmondshire District Council eyes move to school site

A scheme to house a district council's services under one roof and create a community centre has begun.

Richmondshire District Council in North Yorkshire is aiming to move its services to the Richmond Lower School site in the town.

Offices at Swale House, Frenchgate and Friars Wynd would close and the sale would fund the move.

The purchase of the school building, on Station Road, is being negotiated with the county council.

Council Leader John Blackie, said: "For the first time we will be able to create fit for purpose offices for our staff and councillors to work from.

"And an added bonus will be providing a community house, where a number of voluntary and community organisations serving Richmondshire are intending to co-locate.

"It's a massive benefit to the council, its staff, many of the various community groups in Richmond - and the town."

He said rooms - including the Grand Hall - would be available for hire by the community for a variety of public and private uses.
