A major route through North Yorkshire has reopened after being closed for hours because of a hay lorry fire.

A wagon, loaded with bales, caught fire at about 09:45 BST on the A170 bridge over the A19 at Thirsk.

The A19 was closed in both directions until about 16:45 BST due to flaming debris falling on to the road below.

North Yorkshire County Council officials checked the road surface for damage before allowing the road to be reopened, police said.

At its height, four fire crews from Thirsk, Northallerton, Ripon and Richmond were involved in tackling the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire, North Yorkshire Police confirmed.
