Hampsthwaite house explosion man injured

The explosion is being investigated by fire officers

An elderly man has been badly injured in an explosion at a house in a village near Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

He was rescued by neighbours after the blast caused a fire at the semi-detached house in Finden Gardens, Hampsthwaite, on Tuesday night.

The man, who is in his 70s, suffered serious burns and was taken to Wakefield's Pinderfields Hospital where his condition was described as poorly.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated by fire officers.

The blast blew out ground floor windows and a door and the adjoining property was evacuated as a safety precaution, police said.

Gas engineers were also called to the scene.
