Plans to build an outdoor velodrome at the University of York have been approved by councillors.

The 250m long oval track will be built at the university's Sports Village alongside the existing road-racing cycle circuit.

The track, which will be used by students and cycling clubs, is expected to cost about £1m and should be open before the end of the year.

The project is supported by Sport England and British Cycling.
