A man from Scarborough who died after being swept out to sea has been named locally as Andrew Shaun McGeown.

Mr McGeown, who was in his 30s, had been walking his dog with a friend.

North Yorkshire Police said he was reported in the sea at South Bay near the Spa at about 18:00 GMT on Sunday.

He was recovered unconscious from the water about 40 minutes later, and taken to Scarborough District Hospital but was pronounced dead.

Police said his friend was also taken to hospital suffering from shock and the effects of the cold, but was later discharged.

The RNLI, Coastguard and air support from RAF Leconfield attended the scene.
