A new leisure centre has opened in Selby replacing the old one destroyed by fire three years ago.

The £7m facility includes two swimming pools, a gym, sauna and steam room and a synthetic outdoor sports pitch.

It is on the site of the former Abbey Leisure Centre, on Scott Road, which was destroyed after a fire started in the sauna on 28 February 2012.

Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington is due to mark the opening in a civic ceremony on 21 March.

Deputy leader of Selby District Council Gillian Ivey said: "The new leisure centre is a fantastic addition to Selby and residents should be really proud to have such a first rate facility on their doorstep.

"I look forward to welcoming Rebecca Adlington to Selby for this special event in our district."
