Major improvement work has started on one of York's busiest roads, used by 20,000 vehicles a day.

The £4.7m scheme on the A19 south of York has been funded by City of York Council and the Department for Transport.

The council said the four-month programme would tackle congestion and improve the city's public transport.

An extra traffic lane will be added near the Designer Outlet roundabout at the Selby junction.

The A19 runs roughly parallel with the A1, from Doncaster to just north of Newcastle.

Diversions will be in place and road closures are to be restricted to off-peak times where possible.
