A new £2m athletics stadium at the University of York has been opened by double Olympic gold-medallist Dame Kelly Holmes.

The facility has an eight-lane athletics track, pavilion and covered seating for 500 spectators.

The stadium, at the Heslington West campus, will be used by students and members of City of York Athletic Club.

Dame Kelly, who won 1500m and 800m gold in Athens in 2004, used to train in York on the university's cinder track.

She said: "I'm delighted to return to a city I have affection for and to open new athletics facilities that have now changed beyond recognition from those I once ran at."

The athlete retired in 2005 and was subsequently made a Dame for her achievements in sport.
