Scarborough police officer punched by crash driver

A police officer was punched in the face while attempting to an arrest a suspected drunk driver in Scarborough.

North Yorkshire Police was called to Scalby Road at 02:30 BST after a grey Ford Focus crashed into a lamppost and a road sign.

The male driver was said to have attempted to leave the scene and punched the police officer when she tried to detain him.

A man from Scarborough, in his 40s, has been arrested and remains in custody.

Sgt Paul Cording, of the force's Roads Policing Group, tweeted: "Disgusted one of my team has been assaulted for simply doing her job."
