Two people who were feared missing after a yacht sank on the Yorkshire coast have said they are safe.

A major land and sea search was launched after the boat Don't Panic was seen to run aground off West Pier, Scarborough, at about 04:20 BST.

The Coastguard said it appeared the crew had scrambled to safety after abandoning the boat but failed to notify the emergency services.

One of the men made contact after hearing appeals on BBC Radio York.

The discovery of the boat's wreckage had prompted a shoreline search by rescue teams from Scarborough and Burniston.

Searches at sea were carried out by lifeboats from Scarborough and an HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter.
