Police came under attack in Londonderry on Tuesday, while attending the scene of a house fire which has left a elderly man critically ill.

Youths threw fireworks and other missiles at officers attending the scene.

The fire broke out at Rose Court in the Waterside.

The 74-year-old who was badly burned is being treated in intensive care at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The ground and first floors were alight when emergency crews arrived and water jets were used to stop the flames spreading to neighbouring homes.

The Fire and Rescue Service is treating the fire as accidental and the cause is under investigation.
