Pedestrian struck by car fleeing police in Londonderry

A woman has been taken to hospial after being struck by a car which drove into a crowd outside a Londonderry bar.

The woman was flung into the air as the driver of the car fled from police.

A police spokesperson said officers had stopped a silver Volkswagon in the Water Street area at about 0215 BST on Saturday.

The vehicle accelerated away before police could question the occupants.

The car's escape route was blocked by other traffic and as officers again approached the vehicle the driver mounted the footpath and drove through a crowd of pedestrians.

The police later found the car on fire in the Lislane area at about 0330 BST.

The woman was taken to hospital for examination and released a short time later with injuries which are described as superficial.
