Teen dies of suspected meningitis

A County Antrim teenager has died from suspected meningitis.

Fergal McCaughan from Ballycastle had just started a business studies degree at the University of Ulster in Jordanstown.

A spokesman for the university said all students who shared a house with the teenager have had medical examinations and been prescribed antibiotics.

"Steps are being taken to contact all first-year classmates who may be concerned."

"The university would like to extend sympathies to the family of this student and will do everything it can to support them in the difficult time ahead," the spokesperson added.

"Student support nursing staff are advising students in class this morning and distributing leaflets on the symptoms of meningitis, and help and advice is available from the health centre on the Jordanstown campus."
