Appeal over children 'playing with bullets' in Derry

Police have made an appeal to parents following a report that children have been seen playing with "live rounds" in the Bogside area of Londonderry.

They said they had recovered an empty case following the incident in the Beechwood Avenue area on Friday night.

Police said it is believed that a number of bullets may be missing from it.

Local Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue appealed to the people who disposed of the live rounds.

"It is not a responsible thing to do in a built-up area where children may come into contact with it," she said.

In a statement police said parents should speak to children about the dangers of playing with "unusual items".

They added any bullets found or information about their whereabouts should be passed to them immediately.
