A plan to create hundreds of jobs in Londonderry is awaiting approval from the planning office.

The developer, the Orana Group, said it had already signed contracts with supermarket giant Sainsbury's and hotel chain Premier Inn.

It is also hoping to attract a cinema company, a private health care provider and IT firms.

The developer said it would create 475 jobs initially, but that could grow to thousands.

The chairman of the Orana Group, John Farmer, said construction work would begin next year if planning permission was granted.

Sainsbury's has confirmed it is 'fully committed' to the project, with the new store potentially creating 400 jobs.

The planned 60-bedroom Premier Inn would bring 75 jobs.

John Farmer said up to 2,000 jobs could be created if the project reached its potential.

He said the plan was to capitalise on the transatlantic telecommunications connection to Derry, Project Kelvin, and the city being crowned UK City of Culture in 2013.
