Seven police hurt in Newtownards stairwell fire

Seven police officers have been injured after a man set fire to a stairwell at a house in Newtownards.

The officers, all part of the police's armed response unit, had been called to the house in the Meadows area of the Bowtown estate after a man threatened to harm himself.

The 34-year-old threw petrol on the stairs and set them alight as officers who were negotiating with him tried to approach.

The officers and the man are all being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.
