Fire at derelict building in Sion Mills

Firefighters have brought under control a blaze at the site of a historic mill in a County Tyrone village.

About 50 firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze at a derelict building on Mill Avenue in Sion Mills on Saturday.

Nine appliances were sent to the site of Herdman's Mill after the fire was reported at about 0800 BST.

Residents in the area were advised for a time to close their doors and windows because of the volume of smoke.

Roisin Connolly of the Sion Mills Buildings Preservation Trust said the B plus listed elements of the site were unaffected by the blaze.

She said:"The fire is focused on the front offices of the Mourne mill - the large industrial factories that were occupied between 1989 and 2004 when the last mill workers were paid off.

"It does not affect the old part of the mill which is B plus listed and is at the other end of the site.

"The building on fire is deserted at present, it is derelict."

Ms Connolly said the trust had spent £1.5m refurbishing "one end of the listed old mill building to create a number of high-quality workspace units" which it intends to lease out in the near future.
