An MLA has used the social networking site Twitter to complain about staff at Stormont slowing down its internet connection - by using social networks.

John O'Dowd, who describes himself as a "social network junky", tweeted: "Between 12.30 & 2pm it is impossible to work through the medium of the Internet in the Assembly.

"I am told staff etc are on social networks."

He then tweeted about an hour later to say that he had been reassured there was a more general problem with the connection in the Assembly building which is due to be resolved soon.

The Upper Bann representative, who updates his followers using a Blackberry device, also made clear that he has "no objections" to staff using social networks during their breaks.

He wrote: "I am guilty as accused, a social network junky. It is the standard of the IT system letting us down not the users.

"I am now reliably informed plans are afoot to deal with the Internet lull @ the Assembly & that our friend social networking is not to blame."
